What Google wants from your Business Website

So what is it that will makes your site rank higher than a competitor’s? According to Google, the following are the main factors that your site’s dictate search engine ranking:

1. The single biggest factor in determining where a site is ranked by Google is the number of other sites linking to your URL . Remember the web is first and foremost a mechanism that allows the user to ‘hyperlink’ from one site to another.

2. A site’s hierarchy must be clear and use keyword rich text links. As a rule of thumb, every page should be reachable from at least one static text hyperlink.

3. A site should contain a sitemap for users that links that connect to the other areas of your site.

4. Create an information-rich site and be sure to write pages that clearly and accurately describe your business, products or services.

5. In order to be found on the web,  your site’s content must include those keywords or keyphrases that users search under. Here is a great tool from Google to help you learn which keyphrases users and prospects are actually using. (Don’t forget to filter for Irish Results).

6. It is important that your TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and accurate.

7. If you must use dynamic pages (i.e., URLs  that contains  ‘?’ character), you must also be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. If you must,  keep the parameters short and few in number.

8. Limit the number of links on any one webpage (less than 100 preferably).
