So, you want to grow the number of followers you have on Twitter? (Why? I hear the more cynical among you ask… that’s a whole other post!) Here are some pointers;

1. Get Tweeting! - Engage with your existing followers. Be interesting. Ask questions. Make comments. It seems obvious, but you’ll only get out of twitter what you put into it…. a bit like life I suppose.

2. Promote Your Twitter Page on Your Website – A button saying “Follow me on Twitter” will work. If people are on your site, chances are they’ll be interested in following you on Twitter.

3. Get Listed in Twitter Directories – Sites like Just Tweet It and TwitDir make it easy for you to list your profile in relevant categories.

4. Follow More People – Don’t be precious. If you want people to add you, add them first. Every time you decide to follow someone, a message is sent to their email alerting them of your add. If they like your profile, there’s a good chance they’ll add you back.

5. Tweet Regularly – If you want the benefit of more followers, you have to be willing to post good content daily. No excuses. If you want followers, make time.

6. Aim to get ‘Retweeted’ -  Twitter is a viral network so having your ‘handle’ retweeted will put you in front of a lot more faces. Here are 13 Tips for Getting More ReTweets.

7. Become a Useful Resource – Strive to establish yourself as a leading authority in your area of expertise. Keep your Tweets relevant and engaging . Try to referencing useful articles etc. Don’t forget to use a url shortener!
